About the Author
Richard Dawkins is an English ethologist, evolutionary biologist, and author. He is an emeritus fellow of New College, Oxford, and was the University of Oxford’s Professor for Public Understanding of Science from 1995 until 2008. Dawkins first came to prominence with his 1976 book The Selfish Gene.
Dawkins was born in Nairobi, then in British Kenya, on 26 March 1941. His father, Clinton John Dawkins FRSL (1908–2005), was an agricultural civil servant in the British Colonial Service in Nyasaland. The author’s mother, Jean Mary Vyvyan (1910–2016), was a civil servant in the British Colonial Service in Kenya.
His father was called up into the King’s African Rifles during World War II and spent the war in Eritrea, Ethiopia, and Kenya. His father subsequently returned to England. Dawkins has two sisters.
