Abdul Kalam was an Indian scientist and president from 2002 to 2007. Born in a Tamil Muslim family in 1931, Kalam studied physics and aerospace engineering.

He spent the majority of his career at the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO), where he was responsible for the successful launch of numerous satellites. He later became involved in politics as part of India’s ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
