Jean Rhys was born in Dominica, West Indies, in 1890. Her father was a Welsh doctor and her mother was a Creole woman of French descent. Rhys learns and complete her qualification in England and later moved to Paris, where she became involved in the bohemian lifestyle of the city.

It was during this time that she began writing, and her first novel, Quartet, was published in 1928. Rhys continued to write throughout her life, although she did not achieve widespread success until after the publication of Wide Sargasso Sea in 1966.
