Joseph Boyden is a Canadian novelist, short story writer, and essayist. He was born in North York, Ontario, and raised in Willowdale. His parents are of Irish, Scottish, and Anishinaabe heritage.
Boyden attended the University of New Orleans on an athletic scholarship and graduated with a degree in English. He then attended the University of Toronto, where he studied Creative Writing and Indigenous Studies.
In 2007, Boyden married fellow novelist Amanda Boyden, with whom he has two children. Three Day Road was his first novel to receive widespread attention, winning numerous awards in 2006 including Canada Reads.
