Summary of The Yellow Wallpaper

This story follows a woman who is prescribed a course of “rest cure” treatment for her mental illness. The treatment involves being confined to a room with yellow wallpaper – which she finds increasingly unbearable and oppressive.

The protagonist begins to become obsessed with the wallpaper; she notices how it appears to be conveying something, although she cannot understand what. The more she stares at the paper, the more frantic and desperate she becomes; eventually, her obsession leads her to believe that there is a woman trapped behind the wallpaper an insight into her own feelings of entrapment in an oppressive marriage.

The Yellow Wallpaper pdf is ultimately a feminist story of oppression and liberation, as well as a reflection on society’s attitude towards mental health issues. The pdf version can be found online and contains all of the original text along with illustrations from when it was first published.
