The novel culminates with Dr. Jekyll committing suicide in order to prevent himself from turning into Mr. Hyde once more.

It is an exploration of human nature, and its dark depths as well as the struggle between good and evil within each person. The story is a warning against overindulgence in science and the dangers of tampering with nature through unnatural means.

About the Author

Robert Louis Stevenson was born in Edinburgh, Scotland on 13 November 1850 to Thomas and Margaret Isabella Balfour Stevenson. The family was well-to-do and had a long history of involvement with politics and the Church of Scotland, though in his later years Robert Stevenson showed little interest in either.

He attended Edinburgh Academy from 1861 to 1867 and then studied engineering at The University of Edinburgh between 1867 and 1871. Though he never completed his degree, during these years he discovered an aptitude for writing that would eventually become his career.

In May 1880, Stevenson married Fanny Vandegrift Osbourne, who was ten years older than him. The couple moved to America shortly thereafter due to financial difficulties back in Scotland. The couple had two children, daughter Isobel and son Lloyd Osbourne.

Stevenson’s marriage to Fanny Vandegrift Osbourne was not a conventional one. The couple had a strong bond, but they often lived apart and wrote to each other while away.
