Summary of The Story of an Hour 

The novel tells the story of Mrs. Louise Mallard, a woman living in the late nineteenth century who is told of her husband’s death. The news of her husband’s death causes her to feel initially overwhelmed with grief, but then it fills her with joy when she realizes what this means for her future.

Despite the initial shock and sadness of his passing, as Mrs. Mallard begins to consider the implications of her husband’s death, she gradually becomes filled with a renewed sense of joy and freedom.

 

The realization that her marriage was oppressive and limiting to her dreams of autonomy is quickly replaced by an overwhelming sense of liberation as she begins to imagine all the possibilities for a future without him. The story ultimately ends tragically when Mrs. Mallard is informed that her husband has not actually died, and she dies of shock.

Kate Chopin was born on February 8th, 1850 in St. Louis, Missouri. The daughter of Eliza Faris and Thomas O’Flaherty, Chopin was raised in an affluent Creole family.

She attended a convent school until the age of 15 and then later moved to New Orleans with her family where she began teaching at age 20. The author is popular all across the globe because of his work.

At 22, she married Oscar Chopin with whom she had two sons and a daughter before his death in 1882 due to tuberculosis. Following his passing, Chopin returned home to live with her mother where she began writing stories for The St. Louis Times-Democrat newspaper.

The author’s most famous work, The Story of an Hour pdf, was first published in 1894 and is a short story that speaks to the theme of female autonomy and independence; something Chopin had personal experience with as she lived through two marriages. The author died in 1904 due to a brain hemorrhage.
