Summary of The Remain of the Day 

The novel tells the story of Stevens, an aging English butler, and chronicles his professional and personal life as he serves the aristocratic Lord Darlington. The story is set between 1936, when Stevens is at the height of his career, and 1956 when he retired.

The novel examines Stevens’ life as a butler in the context of British society during the interwar period, his relationship with Darlington, and his reflections on loyalty, dignity, respectability, and honor.

The novel revolves around Stevens’ professional life at Darlington Hall and the events that follow his decision to take a road trip to visit Miss Kenton, an old housekeeper. During his time at Darlington Hall, Stevens was dedicated to providing the best service and this journey is an attempt to bridge the gap between him and Miss Kenton.

About the Author

Kazuo Ishiguro was born in Nagasaki, Japan on November 8, 1954. His family moved to England when he was five years old after his father accepted a research position at the University of Kent in Canterbury. He studied English and philosophy at the University of Kent and graduated with a degree in 1978.

After graduating, Ishiguro wrote for various publications, including The Tokyo Times and the New Statesman. He also worked as a songwriter and toured with jazz groups in Japan. In 1982, Ishiguro published his first book, A Pale View of Hills.

His second work, An Artist of the Floating World (1986) was shortlisted for the Booker Prize. However, his third novel The Remains of the Day (1989) won him a Man Booker Prize. His other works include The Unconsoled, When We Were Orphans, Never Let Me Go, The Buried Giant, and Klara and the Sun.

Kazuo Ishiguro is still alive. He continues to write and publish new works, including his 2020 novel Klara and the Sun. He has also won numerous awards, including a Nobel Prize in Literature in 2017.
