About the Author
John Steinbeck was an American writer best known for his novels The Grapes of Wrath, Of Mice and Men, and The Pearl. He was born in 1902 in Salinas, California, to a family of modest means. His father was a former sheriff and his mother was a schoolteacher.
Steinbeck did not finish high school but he did attend Stanford University for a time. He left school without earning a degree and moved to New York City to pursue a career in writing. His first novel, Cup of Gold, was published in 1929.
John Steinbeck married his first wife, Carol Henning, in 1930. The couple had two children: Thomas (born in 1944) and John (born in 1947). The marriage ended in divorce in 1951. Steinbeck then married his second wife, Elaine Scott, in 1952. The couple had one child together.
Despite some early success, Steinbeck struggled for many years to find commercial and critical success. The New York Times reported, “John Steinbeck, the 1962 Nobel Prize-winning author, died of a heart attack today at his home in Sag Harbor, L.I. He was 66 years old.”
