Summary of The Martian

The novel tells the story of an American astronaut, Mark Watney, as he becomes stranded alone on the planet Mars and must use his scientific ingenuity to find a way to survive. The book was nominated for the Hugo Award for Best Novel in 2015. The Martian has been described as “a cross between Apollo 13 and Cast Away”.

Watney is part of the third manned mission to Mars, The Ares 3. The mission’s commander, Melissa Lewis, orders an evacuation when a severe dust storm threatens to destroy their habitat and renders Watney presumed dead. He is struck by debris and lost in the storm; his biomonitor is damaged and stops transmitting his vital signs. The crew leaves Mars believing him to be dead.

Watney wakes up after the storm to find that he is the only human left on Mars. He begins a video diary to record his thoughts and progress in hopes that it will be found by a future mission.

He starts by repairing his biomonitor and improvising an antenna to communicate with Earth. NASA officials discover that Watney is alive, and they begin working on a plan to bring him home.

Watney struggles to find ways to survive on the hostile planet. He grows food, uses his own feces as fertilizer, and creates water by burning hydrogen collected from Mars’ atmosphere. He also jury-rigs a way to communicate with Mars Pathfinder, a robotic spacecraft launched in 1996.
