About the Author
John Ronald Reuel Tolkien was an English writer, poet, philologist, and university professor who is best known for his books The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. He was born on January 3, 1892, in Bloemfontein, South Africa.
When he was three, his mother died and he and his brother were sent to live with their father in England. Tolkien’s father died when he was 12, and he was raised by a guardian. He studied at Exeter College, Oxford, where he graduated with first-class honors in 1915.
After serving in the First World War, he became a professor of Anglo-Saxon at the University of Leeds. He then returned to Oxford, where he became a professor of English language and literature.
Tolkien married Edith Bratt in 1916, with whom he had four children. The couple later moved to Bournemouth, and then to Birmingham, where Tolkien wrote The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. Tolkien died on September 2, 1973, at the age of 81.
