About the Author

John Ronald Reuel Tolkien was an English writer, poet, philologist, and university professor who is best known for his books The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. He was born on January 3, 1892, in Bloemfontein, South Africa.

When he was three, his mother died and he and his brother were sent to live with their father in England. Tolkien’s father died when he was 12, and he was raised by a guardian. He studied at Exeter College, Oxford, where he graduated with first-class honors in 1915.
