The Joy Luck Club PDF was made into a film in 1993, directed by Wayne Wang, and stars Ming-Na Wen, Rosalind Chao, Lauren Tom, and Tamlyn Tomita. It is a classic novel about the immigrant experience in America.

Summary of The Joy Luck Club 

The actual story tells of the lives of four Chinese women who have all emigrated to America at different times, and the lives of their American-born daughters. The women meet once a week to play mahjong, eat, and talk. Through their stories, we learn about the history of China and how it has affected women’s lives.

The book is divided into four sections, with each section containing stories about the women and their daughters. The first section, entitled “Feathers from a Thousand Li Away”, is about Jing-mei Woo, who is asked by her dying mother to take her place in the Joy Luck Club. Jing-mei does not want to be a part of the club.

The second section, entitled “The Twenty-six Malignant Gates”, is about Ying-Ying St. Clair, who was born in China but raised in America. The third section, entitled “Waiting Between the Trees”, is about An-mei Hsu, who was born in China but raised in Taiwan. The fourth and final section, entitled “Double Face”, is about Lindo Jong, who was born in China but raised in America.

About the Author

Amy Tan was born in 1952 in Oakland, California, the middle child and only daughter of Chinese immigrants. Her father, John Tan, came to America in 1947 as a student; her mother, Daisy Tan, followed two years later. The couple had three children: Amy, Peter (born 1955), and John Jr. (born 1958).

Tan’s mother died of cancer when she was fifteen years old, an event that had a profound effect on her. After her mother’s death, Tan and her brothers were raised by their father and grandparents.

The family struggled financially, and Tan often felt like an outsider in the predominantly white community in which she grew up. In 1974, Tan graduated from Linfield College in McMinnville, Oregon, with a degree in English and communications.

She then attended San Francisco State University, where she earned a master’s degree in linguistics in 1976. After graduation, Tan worked as a freelance writer and editor for various publications, including Seventeen magazine.
