Eleanor Estes was born in West Haven, Connecticut on July 11th, 1906. The daughter of an immigrant family, Estes had a strong sense of empathy and understanding for those who are treated differently or not taken seriously within society.
She attended Smith College and studied English Literature from 1924-1928. It is during this time that she wrote The Hundred Dresses pdf, which was published in 1944. The book is still considered a classic and has been translated into over 20 languages since then.
Estes went on to write several other beloved children’s books, including The Moffats, The Witch Family, Ginger Pye, and The Alley. Eleanor Estes got married to William Theophilus Brown in 1928 and had two daughters, Theodora and Margaret.
