About the Author

Sandra Cisneros is an American writer of Mexican descent. Born in Chicago in 1954, she is the only daughter and the seventh child of a working-class Mexican-American family. Cisneros has said that her Chicano heritage and her experience as a woman have been the two biggest influences on her writing.

Cisneros’s parents were both Mexican immigrants who had come to the United States in the 1920s. Her father, an aspiring poet, was a house painter while her mother worked as a seamstress.

The family lived in a series of homes on the city’s South Side, finally settling in the Humboldt Park neighborhood when Cisneros was six years old. Cisneros has said that her childhood was happy despite the family’s poverty.

She attended Catholic schools and showed an early interest in writing, winning a poetry contest at the age of nine. When she was sixteen, Cisneros ran away from home to avoid an arranged marriage. She eventually returned home, but the experience made her determined to get away from Chicago.

Cisneros attended Loyola University Chicago, where she studied English and literature. She later earned a master’s degree in creative writing from the Iowa Writers’ Workshop at the University of Iowa.
