About the Author

Joseph Campbell (1904-1987) was an American writer and thinker who is best known for his work on the hero’s journey, a common narrative pattern that appears in many stories and myths from around the world.

Joseph Campbell was born in New York City on March 26, 1904. His father was an Irish-American Catholic, and his mother was of Scottish descent. He was the first of four children.

The Hero with a Thousand Faces

As a child, Campbell was interested in mythology and religion. He read the works of James Frazer, Edward Burnett Tylor, and other anthropologists. He also read the Bible, the Iliad, and the Odyssey.

In 1921, Campbell graduated from Columbia University with a degree in English literature. He then studied biology at the Sorbonne in Paris and archaeology at the University of Münich. In 1925, he returned to the United States and began working as a journalist.

In the 1930s, Campbell married the writer Jean Erdman. The couple had one child, a daughter named Christine. In the 1940s, Campbell began teaching at Sarah Lawrence College. It was during this time that he wrote his first book, The Hero with a Thousand Faces (1949).
