Summary of The Blade Itself

The novel follows the story of three main characters. Logen Ninefingers is a barbarian warrior who is trying to escape his violent past and the enemies that pursue him. He is eventually captured by a group of warriors called the Shanka, who plan to sacrifice him to their gods.

Inquisitor Glokta is a former soldier who was captured and tortured by the enemy during a war. He is now a torturer himself, working for the kingdom’s ruling council. Glokta is tasked with investigating a group of rebels who are plotting against the ruling council. He is a bitter, cynical character who is haunted by his past and his physical limitations.

Jezal dan Luthar is a vain and ambitious young nobleman who is more interested in impressing others and winning a prestigious fencing competition than serving his country. However, Jezal’s life changes when he is drafted into the army and sent to fight in the war. He is forced to confront his own flaws and the harsh realities of war.

Throughout the book, the three characters’ paths intersect and their lives become intertwined. The story explores themes of power, corruption, and redemption as the characters struggle to survive and find their place in a brutal and violent society.

About the Author

Joe Abercrombie is a British fantasy author, famous for his “First Law Trilogy” series of novels, which includes “The Blade Itself,” “Before They Are Hanged,” and “Last Argument of Kings.” He was born in 1974 in Lancaster, England, and grew up in Bath, where he attended Beechen Cliff School. After studying psychology at Manchester University, he worked as a freelance film editor for several years before becoming a full-time author.

Abercrombie’s “First Law Trilogy” was his debut series of novels and comes between 2006 to 2008. The series is set in a medieval-inspired fantasy world and has been well-received by both critics and readers alike for its complex and morally ambiguous characters, its realistic and gritty depiction of violence, and its exploration of themes such as power, corruption, and redemption.

The Blade Itself

Since the “First Law Trilogy”, Abercrombie has published several more fantasy books, including “The Heroes”, “Best Served Cold”, “Half a King” and “Half the World” which are also set in the same world as the “First Law Trilogy”.

His books are known for their dark, violent, and complex settings and characters that often challenge the traditional fantasy tropes. Joe Abercrombie lives in Bath, England with his family. He is also a fan of heavy metal music and he is an occasional contributor to the British magazine “Terrorizer.”
