About the Author

Mark Twain, born Samuel Langhorne Clemens, was born on November 30th, 1835 in Florida, Missouri. The sixth of seven children, Mark Twain grew up in a tight-knit family and framed his childhood experiences into The Adventures of Tom Sawyer.

In 1853 Twain left home to become a pilot on the Mississippi River and by 1862 he had created his pseudonym, Mark Twain. The following year he published The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County and the rest, as they say, is history.

The Adventures of Tom Sawyer

In 1870 Twain married Olivia Langdon and had four children with her. He was also educated in grammar school and at The University of Missouri but never obtained a degree from either institution.

Mark Twain passed away on April 21st, 1910 at the age of 74. The cause of death was a heart attack. He is buried in Woodlawn Cemetery in Elmira, New York.
