Summary of Sound and Fury 

The book is set in the fictional Yoknapatawpha County, Mississippi, and chronicles the story of Faulkner’s fictional Compson family. Sound and Fury pdf is about the disintegration of a Southern aristocratic dynasty, under the weight of racism, social change, and destructive choices made by its members over three generations.

The book follows the life of the Compsons’ last generation: Jason IV, Benjamin, and Quentin. It is set in war-torn Mississippi immediately after World War I and moves through time to the early 1930s. The novel is told from multiple perspectives: of Benjy (the mentally handicapped brother), Quentin (the sensitive younger brother), and Jason (the eldest).

It also includes flashbacks narrated by Dilsey Gibson a servant who works for the family as well as the omniscient point of view. Each chapter is narrated by a different character, allowing readers to understand each person’s unique experience in their disintegrating world.

About the Author

William Faulkner was born in 1897 in New Albany, Mississippi. He raises by his parents Murphy and Maud Butler Falkner in Oxford, Mississippi. After dropping out of high school in 1915 and attending a brief stint at the University of Mississippi, Faulkner joined the British Royal Air Force during World War I before returning to Oxford four years later.
