William Faulkner was born in 1897 in New Albany, Mississippi. He raises by his parents Murphy and Maud Butler Falkner in Oxford, Mississippi. After dropping out of high school in 1915 and attending a brief stint at the University of Mississippi, Faulkner joined the British Royal Air Force during World War I before returning to Oxford four years later.
