Mariama Bâ was born in 1929 in Dakar, Senegal. She was educated in Senegal and France. Bâ worked as a teacher in Senegal for many years. So Long a Letter is her first novel. She died in 1981.
Bâ married at age eighteen to Ibrahim Diawara with whom she had six children. In 1964, she divorced Diawara and married economist, Omar Gagne. So Long a Letter is Bâ’s first novel. It was published in Dakar, Senegal in 1979.
The novel is set in Senegal and France. Bâ died of cancer in 1981 at the age of 52. She is famous for her work all across the globe. Her novel remains one of the most important works of African literature.
In an interview, the author said that she wrote So Long a Letter because she wanted to “explore the feelings of love, jealousy, and betrayal that women experience in polygamous marriages.” She also wanted to shed light on the experiences of divorced women and mothers.
