About the Author
Adichie was born in the city of Enugu in Nigeria, the fifth and last child of Grace Ifeoma and James Nwoye Adichie. Her father and grandfather were Igbo men who had been educated in English institutions and worked as a professor of statistics and university administrators, respectively.
Adichie grew up in the university town of Nsukka in Enugu State, Nigeria, where she attended primary and secondary school. She briefly studied medicine and pharmacy at the University of Nigeria before moving to the United States in 1997 at the age of 19 to study communications and political science at Drexel University in Philadelphia on a full scholarship.
After completing her bachelor’s degree, she moved to Yale University, where she earned an MA in African studies in 2003 and a master of letters in 2004. Adichie began writing purple hibiscus while she was still an undergraduate student at Drexel University.
