About the Author
Stephen Edwin King was born on September 21, 1947, in Portland, Maine. His father, Donald King, was a merchant seaman. His mother, Nellie Ruth Pillsbury, was a homemaker. After his parents separated when Stephen was two, he and his older brother, David, were raised by his mother.
A few weeks after his mother’s death, his father married Ruth McCausland, who became Stephen’s stepmother. From an early age, Stephen showed a great interest in reading, particularly horror and science fiction magazines.
In 1959, he discovered a box of books belonging to his father’s friend Carl Mears. These books – which included such classics as Bram Stoker’s Dracula and Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein – had a profound effect on Stephen, and he began writing his own stories shortly thereafter.
King made his first professional sale in 1967 when he sold the short story “The Glass Floor” to Startling Mystery Stories. He continued to sell stories to men’s magazines throughout the writing in the 1970s.
