About the Author

Malcolm Gladwell is a Canadian journalist, author, and public speaker. He has been a staff writer for The New Yorker since 1996. In 2005, he published his first book, The Tipping Point: How Little Things Can Make a Big Difference, which became a bestseller.

Gladwell was born in England and grew up in rural Ontario. His mother is Joyce Gladwell, a Jamaican-born psychotherapist. His father, Graham Gladwell, was a mathematics professor at the University of Waterloo.

The author graduated from the University of Toronto with a Bachelor of Arts degree in history in 1984. He then attended the University of Bristol on a one-year Master of Arts program in sociology. Gladwell’s first job was as a journalist for The American Spectator, a conservative political magazine.

Gladwell has said that his mother’s experience as a black woman in 1950s Canada was a major influence on his writing. When he was six, his family moved to Elmira, Ontario. Gladwell’s father died suddenly of a heart attack when Gladwell was 12 years old. His mother then raised him and his two sisters on her own.
