Summary of the Noli Me Tangere
The novel starts with a description of the region around Lake Buhi in Camarines Sur where Filipinos and Spaniards meet to socialize. The story follows Crisostomo Ibarra, a young Filipino who returns home from seven years of studying abroad in Europe.
His return causes much talk among the townspeople as he is the son of Don Rafael Ibarra, an affectionate, generous yet mysterious man who had disappeared several years before.
Ibarra has plans to improve his hometown by introducing modern industry and education but finds himself stonewalled at every turn due to the jealous machinations of Padre Damaso, a powerful Spanish friar with influence over both the local people and colonial government.
On top of this, Ibarra finds out that the girl he has grown to love, Maria Clara, is supposed to marry Padre Damaso’s nephew. The novel ends with Ibarra in prison and the friar exulting in his victory.

He eventually returned to the Philippines and became involved in the reform movement against the Spanish government, a decision that resulted in his execution by firing squad in 1896.
