About the Author
Jhumpa Lahiri is an award-winning author of Bengali descent. She was born in London and raised in Rhode Island. Lahiri graduated from Barnard College and received her MFA from Boston University. Her debut novel, Interpreter of Maladies, won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 2000.
The author was born Jhumpa Shenoy on July 11, 1967, in London, England, to Bengali parents who had come to the UK from India. Lahiri’s mother, Tapati Guha-Thakurta, is a professor of Indian history at Vassar College, and her father, Amar Nath Lahiri, is a retired librarian from the University of Delhi.
Lahiri has two siblings, Akash and Samar. The author grew up in South Kingstown, Rhode Island, where she attended local schools. As a child, Lahiri was fascinated by stories and books, and she spent much of her time reading. When she was eleven years old, her family moved to the United States.
Lahiri has said that she felt “set apart” from other kids when she was growing up, due to her Indian heritage. The author graduated from South Kingstown High School in 1985. She then attended Barnard College, where she received a Bachelor of Arts degree.
