Summary of Name of the Wind

The real story tells of Kvothe’s life, from his humble beginnings as a farmer’s son through his years spent as a notorious student at the University, to his dangerous adventures after he leaves the school.

While the frame story is set about a thousand years after Kvothe’s time and thus provides little direct information about him, it does contain many indirect references to his story. The story is told through the eyes of Devi, a Chronicler who is interviewing Kvothe.

The Name of the Wind is in the fictional world of Temerant and follows the story of Kvothe, an orphan who becomes one of the most notorious magicians of his time. The novel is broken into two parts: the first part is told through the frame story of Kvothe telling his life story to the Chronicler, and the second part is told as a flashback of Kvothe’s own memories. It is a novel about magic, adventure, and self-discovery.
