Tita’s culinary skills are renowned, and she eventually becomes the head cook at the rancho. It is through her cooking that Tita expresses her emotions, and soon it is said that whoever eats her food feels her emotions as well.

Laura Esquivel (born September 30, 1950) is a Mexican novelist and screenwriter. She has written several novels, the most notable being Like Water for Chocolate (1989), which became an international bestseller and was later translated into English and made into an acclaimed film.
Esquivel was born in Mexico City, the daughter of Alejandro Esquivel, a writer and diplomat, and Carmen Zita Sánchez Orozco, a housewife. She began her career as a teacher in 1970 but left teaching in 1976 to become a full-time writer.
Esquivel’s first novel, Into the Beautiful North, was published in 1985. Her second novel, Like Water for Chocolate, was published in 1989 and became an international bestseller. The book was later translated into English and made into an acclaimed film.
