About the Author
James W. Loewen is an American sociologist, historian, and author, best known for his 1995 book, Lies My Teacher Told Me: Everything Your American History Textbook Got Wrong. The book was a New York Times bestseller and has sold over two million copies.
Loewen is also the author of The Confederate and Neo-Confederate Reader, Sundown Towns, Lies Across America, and Teaching What Really Happened. He is a professor emeritus of sociology at the University of Vermont.
Loewen was born in Decatur, Illinois, on December 6, 1942. He attended Decatur Public Schools and graduated from Eisenhower High School in 1960. He received his B.A. from Carleton College in 1964 and his Ph.D. from Harvard University in 1969.
After completing his doctorate, Loewen became an assistant professor of sociology at Tougaloo College, a historically black college in Mississippi. He taught there from 1969 to 1975. He then became a full professor of sociology at the University of Vermont, where he taught from 1975 until his retirement in 2008.
