About the Author
Charlotte Brontë (21 April 1816 – 31 March 1855) was an English novelist and poet, the eldest of the three Brontë sisters who survived into adulthood and whose novels became classics of English literature.
She enlisted in school at Roe Head in January 1831, aged 14 years. Charlotte became a teacher at Roe Head in 1835, but left in June 1838, along with Emily, to work as a governess. In May 1839, they both returned home after the death of their aunt.
In August 1842, Charlotte and Emily went to Brussels to study languages. Their time in Brussels was cut short when their aunt died, causing them to return home in December. It was during this period that Emily wrote Wuthering Heights and Anne wrote Agnes Grey.
In 1846, the three sisters published a collection of poems under the pen names Currer, Ellis, and Acton Bell. Charlotte’s novel Jane Eyre comes under the name Currer Bell in 1847.
Charlotte married Arthur Nicholls, a clergyman, in June 1854. She became pregnant soon afterward, but her health declined rapidly and she died on 31 March 1855, aged 38 years, probably as a result of peritonitis.
