Summary of Interaction of Color

The novel starts with Josef Albers discussing his personal experiences with color. He talks about how he was first exposed to the Interaction of Color while working at the Bauhaus. Albers describes the Interaction of Color as a “method of applying color.”

He goes on to say that the Interaction of Color is not just a set of rules, but rather a way of thinking about color. Albers then provides a brief history of the Interaction of Color, starting with its origins in the work of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe.

Goethe’s work was based on the idea that colors are affected by each other when they are placed next to each other. This theory was later expanded upon by other artists and thinkers, including Michel Eugène Chevreul, Ogden Rood, and Johannes Itten.

Albers himself first started experimenting with the Interaction of Color in the 1930s. He developed a set of exercises that he felt would help students to understand the effects of color on each other.
