Summary of If I Stay
The story follows 17-year-old Mia Hall as she struggles to deal with the aftermath of a car accident that kills her parents and younger brother. Mia is left in a coma, and while she is unconscious, she has an out-of-body experience in which she looks down on her own body and sees the doctors working to save her.
Mia then has a series of flashbacks of her life up to this point. She remembers meeting and falling in love with Adam, a talented musician. She also recalls all of the happy moments she shared with her family. As she reviews her life, she must decide whether to wake up and face the pain of living without her loved ones, or to let go and die.
in the end, Mia wakes up from her coma and chooses to live. She starts attending school and college, and eventually becomes a successful cellist. Adam also returns to her life, and they get married. The story ends with a pregnant Mia reflecting on how everything that has happened – both the good and the bad – has led her to this moment of happiness.
