About the Author

Jonathan Swift was born in Dublin, Ireland on November 30th, 1667. His father Jonathan Sr. had died before his birth and his mother Abigail Erick Swift returned to England shortly after. He was raised by his uncle Godwin who was a leading clergyman in the Church of Ireland.

Swift attended Kilkenny Grammar School where he received an excellent classical education and later Trinity College in Dublin where he earned Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees. He also studied at Oxford University but left without completing the degree due to financial problems.

Gulliver's Travels

After college, Swift served as secretary to Sir William Temple who was an important diplomat at the time and one of Swift’s mentors. Over the next decade, Swift wrote Gulliver’s Travels, A Tale of a Tub, and other important works.

Swift was an active political figure in England and a staunch Tory. He wrote several political pamphlets and satires that were highly critical of the Whig party. The author takes interest in writing from an early age.
