About the Author
Benjamin Carson, M.D., is a professor of neurosurgery, oncology, plastic surgery, and pediatrics at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. He was the first to successfully separate conjoined twins joined at the head in 1987 and has published over 100 scientific articles.
In 2008 he was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President George W. Bush. He was also appointed as the 17th Secretary of Housing and Urban Development in 2017. He is an active public speaker, philanthropist, and author of Gifted Hands: The Ben Carson Story.
Benjamin Carson was born in Detroit, Michigan on September 18th, 1951 to a single mother. Despite the difficulties of growing up in an impoverished family, Ben excelled academically.
He was offered scholarships to both Yale and Harvard universities and eventually attended Yale University for college. He then went on to attend the University of Michigan Medical School and trained in neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins Hospital.
