Summary of Frindle 

The main story is about a fifth-grade student, Nick Allen, who comes up with a new word, Frindle. He starts using the word in place of the word pencil. Frindle quickly catches on, and soon everyone is using it. The school even starts using it in its official communications.

Nick’s teacher, Mrs. Granger, gets angry and tries to get him to stop using the word, but he refuses. She then tries to get the school to stop using it, but they refuse. She eventually realizes that she can’t stop the word from being used and that Nick was just trying to be creative.

About the Author

Andrew Clements is the author of this novel. He has also written many other books for young readers, including About Average, Room One, and Two Under Par. He lives in Massachusetts with his family.

Clements was born in Jersey City, New Jersey on May 20, 1949. When he was three, his family moved to the small town of Mount Vernon, Ohio. He has one sister, two years younger than him. His father worked as a chemical engineer and his mother was a homemaker.

Clements graduated from Kenyon College in 1971 with a degree in English. He began his career as a teacher, teaching fifth grade in a public school in suburban Chicago. He taught for six years before moving to Massachusetts to become a full-time writer.
