Sherman Alexie is a Native American author, poet, and filmmaker. He was born in 1966 on the Spokane Indian Reservation in Wellpinit, Washington. He is of Spokane and Coeur d’Alene heritage. Sherman grew up on the reservation and was raised by his mother and grandparents.
The author attended Gonzaga University and later received a scholarship to attend the Institute of American Indian Arts in Santa Fe, New Mexico. the author later earned a scholarship to attend Washington State University, where he earned a degree in American Studies.
Alexie began his writing career as a poet, and his first book of poetry, “The Business of Fancydancing,” was published in 1992. He has since published several other poetry collections.
