About the Author

Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra was born in Alcalá de Henares, Spain, to a family of merchants. He married Catalina de Salazar y Palacios at the age of 25 and the couple had one daughter, Isabel de Saavedra.

Cervantes served as a soldier in the Spanish Navy during the Battle of Lepanto and spent five years as a prisoner of war in Algeria. He returned to Spain and became a court official, but left government service to pursue writing full-time when Don Quixote was published in 1605.
