Summary of Catch 22

The real story of Catch-22 is the story of the men in Yossarian’s squadron and, more generally, the story of the human condition. It is a satire on the bureaucratic mind that controls military organizations. The action of Catch-22 takes place during World War II, but the book’s theme is universal.

The novel is set on Pianosa, a small island in the Mediterranean Sea off the coast of Italy, which is home to an American bomber squadron. The novel follows the experiences of Captain John Yossarian, a U.S. Army Air Forces B-25 bombardier.

It is a Catch-22 situation in which a person is caught in a dilemma from which there is no escape because the conditions of the dilemma are mutually contradictory. Catch-22 is famous as a metaphor for the absurdities of war and bureaucracy.
