Summary of the Being Mortal

The book starts with the main character, Dr. Atul Gawande, a surgeon and public health researcher who sets out to explore how medical professionals can better help people with life-threatening illnesses live out the remainder of their lives in comfort and with dignity.

Dr. Atul examines the current medical system which often focuses on providing treatments that may extend life but often come with side effects that degrade the quality of life. He then dives into conversations with medical professionals and people living with terminal illnesses, to find out what would make life meaningful for them.

Dr. Atul tries to explore the idea that people who are nearing the end of life should be able to live their lives in a way that is meaningful for them, rather than having medical professionals dictate what their lives should look like. He aims to find a middle ground between prolonging life, and still maintaining its quality.
