James Allen was born in Leicester, England, in 1864 and was introduced to the idea of self-improvement at a young age. As a student, he studied philosophy and literature and became interested in Eastern philosophy.
As an adult, Allen continued to study these areas of thought which eventually influenced his writings. Allen attended a local school in Leicester before leaving at the age of 17 to take up employment as a clerk.
As he continued to study literature, philosophy and Eastern thought, Allen eventually began writing about his ideas on how we can use our thoughts to shape our lives.
In 1895, Allen married Lily Grace Smith and the couple moved to Ilfracombe, England. During their marriage, they published several works together including As a Man Thinketh. The book was originally released in 1902, under the title As A Man Thinketh: In His Own Image.
