Summary of Americanah 

The real story tells of Ifemelu, a young Nigerian woman who moves to America for college and eventually becomes successful. It is a story about race and immigration and love. Americanah covers a lot of difficult topics but it is praised for its writing style and ability to tackle these difficult subjects.

Ifemelu and Obinze meet as teenagers in Nigeria and are quickly drawn to each other. However, Ifemelu’s parents send her away to America for college. Ifemelu adjusts to American life but struggles with her identity as a black woman. Meanwhile, Obinze illegally immigrates to England where he also struggles to find his place.

After years apart, Ifemelu and Obinze reconnect in Nigeria. They must confront the choices they have made, and decide if their love is strong enough to overcome all obstacles.

About the Author

Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie was born in Nigeria in 1977. She is the author of three novels: Purple Hibiscus, which won the Commonwealth Writers’ Prize and the Hurston/Wright Legacy Award; Half of a Yellow Sun, which won the Orange Prize and was shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize.

Adichie was born in the city of Enugu in Nigeria, the fifth and last child of Grace Ifeoma and James Nwoye Adichie. Her father, James Nwoye Adichie, was a professor of statistics at the University of Nigeria.

Americanah pdf

Her mother, Grace Ifeoma, was the first female registrar at the University of Nigeria. Adichie grew up in an Igbo household in the university Staff Quarters, Enugu campus.

She spent her summer holidays in Nsukka, where her father worked as a professor at the University of Nigeria. Adichie attended primary school at St. Francis Catholic Primary School, Nsukka, and secondary school at the all-girls Holy Rosary College, Enugu.

After obtaining her West African Senior School Certificate in 1995, she studied medicine and pharmacy at the University of Nigeria for a year and a half.
