About the Author

Madeleine L’Engle was born in New York City in 1918. She was the second of six children. Her parents were both writers. L’Engle graduated from Smith College in 1941 and married Hugh Franklin that same year. The couple had three children.

The author began writing at a young age and had her first novel published when she was only 18 years old. She wrote more than 60 books during her lifetime, including A Wrinkle in Time. L’Engle won the Newbery Medal for A Wrinkle in Time in 1963. She died in 2007 at the age of 89.
