Summary of A Room of One’s Own
The book starts with an exploration of women ‘s lack of freedom and financial independence, both historically and in 1929 England when A Room of One’s Own was written. Woolf examines the limitations women faced in education, employment opportunities, literary history, and economic autonomy.
She argues that without access to money or a room of their own, women writers face insurmountable challenges in producing quality work. Woolf then turns her attention to Shakespeare’s sister, a hypothetical female counterpart to the legendary playwright.
She imagines what circumstances might have led to this woman being denied the opportunity for an education and creativity despite any potential she may have had. Woolf conjectures that if such a talented woman were given access to money and space she would likely be celebrated as one of history’s greatest writers.
