Summary of A Little Life 

This is the story of four friends – Jude, Willem, Malcolm, and JB – who meet as students at an elite university in New York. They soon become inseparable, sharing everything from their deepest secrets to their most intimate desires.

But as they enter adulthood and their lives take them in different directions, the friends find themselves tested in ways they never could have imagined. Jude, haunted by a traumatic childhood, is consumed by self-destructive behavior. Willem, the kind and loyal heart of the group, wrestles with addiction.

Malcolm, the gifted artist, faces a devastating illness. And JB, the political idealist, confronts betrayal in both his personal and professional lives. About the Author

Hanya Yanagihara is a writer and editor. A Little Life is her second novel. She lives in New York City. The author Hanya was born in New York City and raised in Hawaii. She is of Japanese, Chinese, and Caucasian descent.

Yanagihara’s father is a professor of sociology at the University of Hawaii, and her mother is a nurse. The author graduated from Punahou School in Honolulu and then studied English and American literature at Brown University, where she received her A.B. in 1996.

After college, she worked as an editor at Variety magazine in Los Angeles, and then as a senior editor at T: The New York Times Style Magazine. Yanagihara’s first novel, The People in the Trees (2013), was inspired by the life of Daniel Carleton Gajdusek, a Nobel Prize-winning scientist who was convicted of child molestation.
